Ebook About
Why are more and more psychotherapists embracing meditation practice, while so many Buddhists are exploring psychology? “Both psychology and Buddhism seek to provide freedom from suffering,” explains Bruce Tift, “yet each offers a completely different approach for reaching this goal.” In Already Free, Tift opens a fresh and provocative dialogue between these two profound perspectives on the human condition.   Tift reveals how psychotherapy’s “Developmental” approach of understanding the way our childhood wounds shape our adult selves both contradicts and supports the “Fruitional” approach of Buddhism, which tells us that the freedom we seek is always available. In this investigation, he uncovers insights for connecting with authentic experience, releasing behaviors that no longer serve us, enhancing our relationships, and more. “When we use the Western and Eastern approaches together,” writes Bruce Tift, “they can help us open to all of life—its richness, its disturbances, and its inherent completeness.”

Book Already Free: Buddhism Meets Psychotherapy on the Path of Liberation Review :

This book has meant so much to me over the past year. I keep going back to it for insight and guidance. Tift has made Vajrayana buddhist teachings and western developmental psychology his own, over the course of decades of therapeutic work with individuals and couples. There is little quoting and no mimickry here. Highly original. Especially recommended for those in intimate relationships, which Tift argues offer one of the best opportunities to put buddhist wisdom teachings to work without tripping out on the "specialness" of the "spiritual path."The chapter about anxiety exemplifies his originality. He says that if anxiety is the normal human response to the basic groundlessness of life, then we'd better get used to it, because it isn't going anywhere. Set aside the fantasy of an enlightened, anxiety-free life and do the real work of developing our capacity to simply hold and allow the anxiety that accompanies the egocentric human mind from birth to death. As Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche taught, that's what non-aggression is about: allowing what is, without panic, with confidence.Tift presents the insights of western developmental psychology as complements to the even more fundamental wisdom teachings. The way we grew up as children, the behaviors that were rewarded and punished, have rather predictably and systematically shaped the mind that finds its way to a meditation seat. And to a marriage. Naming and understanding those patterns can clear the mental underbrush in a way that basic meditation probably won't. But with his bigger view, Tift never settles for simply managing personhood to a more stable comfortable state. He outlines the practical discipline that trains us in how to see through it entirely, on the spot--already free.
Books seem to happen along for me at serendipitous times in my life. In recent years I have read and listened to a lot on how the mind works, psychology, and Buddhism / mindfulness through my journey of self discovery as my "core vulnerabilities" from childhood refuse to be ignored in my adulthood. Already Free, for me, at this time, has been a God (or Buddha)send. It has provided such contextual clarity that I know it will impact how I think, how I deal with anxieties that surface, how I relate to others, and how I live my life going forward.Bruce Tift is an experienced, genuine, and giving genius. He gives hope to those of us who are suffering (which is all of us) but in a way that is real, pragmatic, wise, and honest. He provides an intuitive framework for his premise of a combined Western and Eastern approach toward well-being - clarifying the benefits, shortfalls, and best applications of each. He goes into quite a bit of very useful detail on each concept. He brings his insights to life with highly relatable examples of patients he has helped over his tenure as a therapist, and from his own life (but in a useful, not self-centered way). And, he does all this in a way that paints such a comprehensive picture that helps one connect the many dots of their life and psyche.A masterful book, that gets a little heady at times, but one packed with extremely helpful content on almost every page. Thank you Mr. Tift for this gift - I just wish you wrote it and I read it years ago ;-)
