Ebook About
Verbal Judo is the martial art of the mind and mouth that can show you how to be better prepared in every verbal encounter. Listen and speak more effectively, engage people through empathy (the most powerful word in the English language), avoid the most common conversational disasters, and use proven strategies that allow you to successfully communicate your point of view and take the upper hand in most disputes.Verbal Judo offers a creative look at conflict that will help you defuse confrontations and generate cooperation from your spouse, your boss, and even your teenager. As the author says, "when you react, the event controls you. When you respond, you’re in control."This new edition features a fresh new cover and a foreword demonstrating the legacy of Verbal Judo founder and author George Thompson, as well as a never-before-published final chapter presenting Thompson’s "Five Universal Truths" of human interaction.

Book Verbal Judo, Second Edition: The Gentle Art of Persuasion Review :

My feedback to the Author:Sir, much like many law enforcement professionals, you’ve fallen victim to your own ego. I’m confident you read these reviews so I wanted to give you some helpful feedback. You start the book with your qualifications and generally badassery. This is ok and expected. As a reader, I appreciate your qualifications.Yet, as the book goes on you simply overdue it. Chapter after chapter you recite your: education, martial arts expertise and physical prowess. My god man! We get it!As a reader, I’m skipping over these sections constantly. I think, ok, he is that guy in law enforcement (we all know that guy). It takes away from the gem of a book you have created. To reiterate, we get it man! You’re Chuck Norris times two. You created Giraffes by uppercutting a horse. You can hear sign language. You are so bad ass, you make onions cry. You don’t shake hands, you make them tremble. You play Russian roulette with a fully loaded gun and win!For the love of all that is holy, please have a serving of humble pie! Whew....rant over. Excuse my candor.Hopefully this sufficiently illustrates my point. One smart ass cop to another. Otherwise, this is a great book. Godspeed.
I always thought Judo was a much more efficient martial art than Karate but that similarity also works in the verbal martial arts of communication, speech and debate. This is a beautiful book to learn how to talk to direct people and get things done (verbal judo) and not fight and snap directly at people in anger (verbal karate). Also, helps in controlling your anger and not making a speech you'll live to regret. Some of the material in the book is just plain common sense like the golden rule and trying to respond instead of reacting. If you react to what comes naturally to your mind to say then you'll make the greatest speech you'll ever regret. If anything you get from this book, the most important would be empathy and learning how not to see a problem from your point of view but trying to see a problem from the perspective of the person, who you are fighting with. Paraphrasing someone else’s thoughts and demands is a nice technique George mentions as way to develop empathy with another person. Empathy vents anger and calms people down. It lessens distrust and builds amity. There are useful acronyms throughout the book like LEAPS (Listen, Empathy, Ask, Purpose and Summarize not in sequential order) is good for listening to someone vent his anger and PAVPO (Perspective, Audience, Voice, Purpose and Organization) is great for public speaking. PACE: Problem (situation you're in), Audience (to whom you are speaking), Constraints (obstacles to effective communication and Ethical presence (your professional face not your ego saving face) is a great acronym to use in confrontational verbal encounters. Useful are George Thompson's strip phrases to deflect angry insults thrown at you ('preciate that, understan that, oyesss, i be doin that). The key to strip phrases is too feel good on the inside while being berated. Make sure the person insulting you doesn’t notice your strip phrases otherwise it could lead to more not less belligerence. Feeling good on the inside deflects these insults and doesn’t lead to any wounds on the inside. There are also nice tips sprawled throughout in terms of taking criticisms and how to motivate people you manage like raising expectations and to praise correctly (try to put the criticism first and the praise last if you need to criticize). Praising should also be specific and not in generalities as this makes the praise look phony and perfunctory. I found using the five universal truths of human interaction successful and efficient in my daily business life as a manager, especially numbers 2 (All people would rather be asked than commanded, 3 (All people would like to know why they are being asked or told to do something) and 4 (All people would rather have options than threats to save face). I am definitely keeping this book for future use to refer back to in dealing with angry people and to keep myself in check in times of anger and frustration. So, instead of me venting my anger or verbal karate at someone, I can sublimate my verbal karate into verbal judo to be more productive in getting my situation resolved! I am using this review to summarize the core themes and points from George’s philosophy from his book that a reader here on amazon can review quickly without needing to buy his book and immediately apply this philosophy in his life as a small trial of his methods. If it works for the reader, then by all means go ahead and buy George’s book to learn more of the subtleties and detail of George’s methods.
